Orthotics and Prosthetics Clinic

The Orthotics and Prosthetics Clinic is a comprehensive clinic which addresses the needs of patients requiring a brace or artificial limb. The clinic's goals are to maximize the quality of life and to help individuals achieve as much independence as possible in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The rehabilitation team approach

The Orthotics and Prosthetics clinic uses the expertise of an interdisciplinary team to successfully meet the bracing and/or artificial limb needs of patients.

Depending on your individual needs, your team may include:

  • An occupational therapy consultation, if needed
  • An orthotist: a professional who makes braces
  • A physiatrist: a medical doctor who specializes in rehabilitation, directs the clinic and supervises the team
  • A physical therapist: certified in neurologic physical therapy
  • A prosthetist: a professional who makes artificial limbs

During the visit, the team thoroughly evaluates each patient’s medical status, physical abilities, and lifestyle needs. Each member of the team is experienced in evaluating and fitting devices to restore function with the goal of achieving the highest level of function possible.

The team invites input from other health professionals involved with the patient and encourages family members, other caregivers and health professionals involved in the patient’s care to accompany the patient to their visit.

Following a comprehensive evaluation, results and treatment options are shared with the patient. Once the patient and team have agreed on the most appropriate method of treatment, a plan is developed. This may include recommendations for:

  • Back and neck braces
  • Custom shoe inserts
  • Full range of upper or lower extremity prosthetics
  • Leg braces

Both ready-made and custom orthotics are used depending on the specific needs of each individual. Once a brace or artificial limb has been made, follow-up visits are scheduled as needed. A course of therapy services may be recommended to help the patient to achieve optimal use of the new device.

Our clinic

The clinic serves all age groups and patients with a wide variety of neurologic and orthopedic diagnoses.

The Orthotics and Prosthetics clinic is held weekly. Referrals can be made by physicians, therapists, nurses, other caregivers, or self-referral.

Clients may use a prosthetist or orthotist of their own choosing. Both the physiatrist, who writes the primary prescription, and the therapist are available to share relevant information and to provide the necessary assistance.

Financial information

Payments for services, braces, or artificial limbs are covered by many insurance plans. Prior approval may be required in some instances. Please check your individual insurance to see if this applies to you. In addition, payment plans can be arranged for services or devices not covered by your insurance.
