Cheshire Medical Center's inpatient services include several different medical care units that serve different levels of care and a variety of patient populations.

Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Unit

Cheshire is home to a comprehensive acute inpatient physical rehabilitation unit. We offer rehabilitation for a full range of conditions, from stroke to significant orthopaedic illness or injury. Learn more about inpatient physical rehabilitation.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Cheshire’s ICU provides critical care and life support for severely ill or injured patients. In this unit, patients receive constant care and close monitoring by a highly specialized team. Our goal is to keep a patient’s condition from getting worse and provide treatments to help them achieve the fullest possible recovery.

Preoperative Unit

Cheshire's Preop Unit provides comprehensive nursing care to prepare patients for surgical procedures. It also houses the Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) offices. The unit is located on the first floor of the South Building, with hours of operation from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Cheshire’s PCU provides an "intermediate" level of care. This means it often serves as a step between the ICU and the Medical-Surgical Unit. Cheshire’s PCU focuses on general and cardiac care. Remote cardiac telemetry technology allows our staff to monitor our patients’ heart rhythms anywhere in the hospital.

Thompson Medical-Surgical Unit

The Thompson Unit delivers care to adult patients with a wide variety of needs, including postoperative care. The staff uses some of the latest medical technology to monitor and treat our patients.

Women and Children’s Health Unit (WACHU)

Cheshire’s WACHU provides comprehensive obstetrical, gynecologic, newborn, and pediatric collaborative inpatient care. Our team includes Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM), obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYN), pediatricians, and skilled nurses. Doula, lactation, and anesthesia services are available on site. Neonatology consults available 24/7 via telemedicine. Learn more about our birthing and pediatric unit.
