Rheumatology
Rheumatology involves a wide range of illnesses that can affect joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, and other organ systems. Some of these illnesses include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, myositis, scleroderma, etc. Since rheumatological disorders can affect multiple organ systems, it is always important to look at the patients as a whole picture, not just a specific body part.
Although rheumatological illnesses are rarely "curable," they are manageable. Rheumatology patients need close follow-up with their providers. In most cases, they need medical therapy to control their diseases. Patients can have a normal life as long as their illness is well controlled.
I like to spend time with my patients, and find it most helpful to listen to them to understand their health concerns. I help educate them so that they have a better understanding of the disease process. We work together to achieve long-term disease control so they can continue their lives as they want to.
