Understanding Ankle Arthritis, From Diagnosis to Treatment

Are you dealing with stiff or aching ankles? It could be ankle arthritis.

Serena Shomody, DPM, FACFAS, one of our podiatrists, breaks down the different forms of ankle arthritis and what treatment options are available.

What is ankle arthritis?

Ankle arthritis is a condition where the protective cartilage in the ankle joint wears down or becomes inflamed, causing the bones to rub against each other.

What types of ankle arthritis are there?

The most common type of ankle arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, is caused after a major injury to the ankle, such as severe ankle fracture, repetitive sprains or chronic instability.

Osteoarthritis occurs after degenerative wear and tear on the joint cartilage.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, complex autoimmune disease where the body mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints, causing inflammation in the ankles.

Gout arthritis is another form where uric acid builds up in the joints and will cause sudden onset of red, hot and swollen joints. This can occur after periods of dehydration, sudden diet change, beta-blockers or diuretic management.

What are the symptoms of ankle arthritis?

The most common symptoms of ankle arthritis include:

  • Mechanical sounds or locking: Grinding, catching or popping sensations inside the joint during movement.
  • Pain: A deep ache, stiffness or sharp twinge when walking, using stairs or standing on uneven ground. Pain often worsens with activity or toward the end of the day.
  • Stiffness and swelling: Reduced range of motion and morning stiffness that usually loosens up a bit with gentle movement.
