Jake Huckins, RN, is Cheshire Medical Center’s latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
The DAISY Award recognizes exceptional nurses for their compassionate and extraordinary care, based on nominations from patients, families and colleagues.
Huckins is a registered nurse in Cheshire’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The patient who nominated Huckins said they were anxious about staying at the hospital overnight, due to past traumatic experiences.
Huckins immediately put the patient at ease by knocking every time before entering her room and went above and beyond to assure she was comfortable and felt safe.
“Jake’s medical competence is second to none. But his ability to assess patients and see us as human beings with unique needs who deserve dignity and respect is what sets him apart,” the nominator said.
The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) in 1999. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say "thank you" to nurses in a very public way.
