Sylvia Dunne, RN, BSN, is the first Cheshire Medical center nurse to receive the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
The DAISY Award recognizes exceptional nurses for their compassionate and extraordinary care, based on nominations from patients, families and colleagues.
Dunne has worked as a registered nurse in Cheshire’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since 2022. The patient who nominated Dunne said she “truly exemplifies what it means to be a DAISY nurse.”
"From the moment Sylvia assumed my care, she treated me not only with exceptional clinical skills, but with genuine empathy and kindness ... ," the patient who nominated Dunne said. "In a moment when I felt exposed, she reminded me why nursing is such a powerful and meaningful profession."
The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) in 1999. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say "thank you" to nurses in a very public way.
